Alcohol and Dress Rules in the Maldives

Alcohol is legal for visitors on resort islands and liveaboard boats. It is not sold on inhabited local islands. Bikinis are normal on resort beaches and on a local island's bikini beach, not in the village, mosque area, or harbor. Shoulders and knees covered is the practical rule in town.

Ramadan changes restaurant hours on local islands. Resorts usually keep their own schedules.

Ask the guesthouse which beach is the bikini beach before you walk through the island in swimwear.
