The Maldives is a nation of about 1,200 coral islands spread across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean. Most visitors arrive at Velana International Airport on Hulhumalé and transfer by speedboat, domestic flight, or seaplane.
Best time to visit: November to April is the drier northeast monsoon. May to October brings more rain and is the main surf season in the north and central atolls.
Where to stay: Resorts are self-contained. Local islands such as Maafushi, Thoddoo, and Rasdhoo have guesthouses, restaurants, and dive centers at lower prices, with house rules on dress away from the bikini beach.
What to pack: Reef-safe sunscreen, light clothing, a rash guard, and an underwater camera. US dollars are widely accepted alongside the Maldivian rufiyaa.
Before you fly: Complete the IMUGA Traveller Declaration online within 96 hours of arrival, and keep your accommodation booking and onward ticket handy for immigration.
