Local Islands vs Resorts in the Maldives

A Maldives resort occupies a whole island and includes meals, a house reef, and private beaches. A local-island stay uses a guesthouse or hotel in a community, with restaurants in town and a designated bikini beach. Local islands cost less and show daily life. Resorts cost more and keep alcohol and bikinis inside the resort.

Choose a resort for a honeymoon, all-inclusive diving, and no ferry planning.

Choose a local island such as Maafushi, Thoddoo, Rasdhoo, Dhigurah, or Thulusdhoo for guesthouses, independent dining, and lower nightly rates. Dress modestly away from the bikini beach. Alcohol is not sold on local islands.
